Pultrusion is a frequently used production technique for making composite profiles, rods, sheets, panels, and tubes. In this process, continuous reinforcements are subsequently pulled through an open formulation bath (for fiber impregnation) and a die (formulation cure) to make components in the desired shape and dimensions. In some cases impregnation and cure are combined in an injection die, the main advantage of injection being the reduced styrene emissions.

The pultrusion process allows for the manufacturing of high strength composite materials with relatively high fiber content (up to 70 weight %), and can be used both for glass and for carbon reinforcements. Advantages of composite components made through pultrusion compared to other construction materials are considerable: lighter than steel and aluminium, stronger than steel (on a weight to weight ratio), great corrosion resistance (even to very aggressive chemicals), excellent electrical and thermal insulation, and flexibility to make complex forms in one process operation.

AOC Products

AOC offers a broad range of products for pultrusion applications sold under Atlac®, Beyone™, Daron®, and Synolite™ brands. These products include unsaturated polyester formulations, vinyl ester formulations and low profile additives (LPA). Dimensional stability and surface appearance (e.g. gloss) can be greatly enhanced by the use of LPA. Please consult the Pultrusion Product Guide for more detailed information.

AOC has two R&D centers supporting customers in pultrusion applications, one based in Zwolle (Netherlands) and one in Nanjing (China). Both have state-of-the-art equipment and support facilities, including pultrusion machines (identical type in Zwolle and in Nanjing for global consistency, mechanical property testing capabilities and an analytical laboratory.
