Ortho/NPG

Ortho/NPG formulations are a type of polyester formulation used in the production of composites, reinforced plastics, and gelcoats. The term Ortho/NPG refers to the combination of orthophthalic acid (Ortho) and neopentyl glycol (NPG) in the formulation matrix. These formulations exhibit specific characteristics that make them suitable for various applications. They are generally more cost-effective compared to high-performance resins like Iso/NPG or vinyl ester resins. This makes them a preferred choice for applications where a balance of performance and cost is crucial.

During curing, these type of resins undergo a polymerization process where the liquid formulation transforms into a solid polymer matrix. This matrix consists of long, interconnected polymer chains that provide structural integrity and contribute to the overall strength of the material. 

Additionally, the inclusion of neopentyl glycol, a diol alcohol, in the product formulation contributes to the material's flexibility and impact resistance. This flexibility prevents the formulation from becoming brittle, enhancing its ability to withstand dynamic loads and impacts without failure. Because of these combinations, Ortho/NPG formulations still exhibit decent resistance to chemicals and corrosion. This resistance contributes to the longevity and durability of the material, particularly in applications where exposure to harsh environments is a concern.
