New Advances in Molded-in-Color, UV-Stable Composites for Automotive Applications

New sheet molding compound (SMC) formulation technology from AOC has improved molded-in color uniformity and scratch-resistance for composite pick-up truck boxes. The surface improvements are combined with the excellent handling characteristics and mold flow properties needed for high-glass concentration compounds. Surface aesthetic advantages of the new formulation over current materials include a highly uniform molded-in color, and superior scratch resistance. The SMC system uses conventional magnesium oxide thickening that ensures handling characteristics and excellent flow properties in the mold.
Composite pickup boxes meet required performance requirements with the disadvantages of metal. Compared to steel, composites will not corrode, are lighter weight, and can be designed with more complex geometries. Compared to aluminum boxes, composites offer better dent resistance and more robust surface aesthetics.
